Control 16-Channel ProXR Relay Board with Quick Timer R16X

Quick Timer R16X software is designed to set timer to control 16-channel relay boards automatically.

Here will show you how to control 16-channel ProXR relay board of National Control Devices with Quick Timer R16X.

1. Plug-in power for 16-channel ProXR relay board, and connect it to your computer through USB interface or Ethernet interface.

2. Download, install and run Quick Timer R16X software.

3. Click Configure button to open Configuration panel.

  • Select Manufacturer – National Control Devices
  • Select Device Type – ProXR
  • Select connection interface
    • Serial Port/USB for RS-232 and USB interface, select the right Port Name and Baud Rate 115200 for ProXR relay board
    • Network  for Ethernet interface, input IP address and Port 2101 for ProXR relay board

4. Click OK button on Configuration panel. You will see the connection information about the relay board is shown on the left side of status bar. In middle of the status bar, there is a flashing arrow. It indicates the ProXR relay board has been connected with Quick Timer R16X software.

5. It’s ready to control the relay board manually with Quick Timer R16X.

  • Click Turn All On/Turn All Off button to control all 16 channels together.
  • Or click  On/Off switcher for each channel to control separately.

6. Click Setting button for each channel to set up Duration and Action for auto control.

7. Press Start All button to step into auto control mode for all 16 channels, or press Start button for each channel to control the relay separately.

Conditional Control Relays with N-Button

N-Button software allows you to create widgets to control relay boards.  You can not only simply turn relay on or off, but set up conditional rule to control relays.

Here will show you an example about how to set up conditional rule to control relays.

We will use the push button of push notification board to control relay board. Both of the push notification board and relay board are from National Control Devices. We already have a blog about how to control/toggle relays by push notification board.

We will add conditional rule to avoid Relay 1 and Relay 2 to be on at the same time. That is,

  • When Relay 1 is ON, Relay 2 can NOT be ON;
  • When Relay 2 is ON, Relay 1 can NOT be ON;

This might be happened when you use relay board to control two different doors or valves, if you don’t want them to be opened at the same time.

Step 1: Be sure you already installed N-Button software, connected push notification board and relay board to your computer.

Step 2: Run N-Button Lite or Pro, add push notification board and relay board to Device Manager.

Step 3: Add two Relay Buttons to toggle Relay 1 and Relay 2 separately.

You will see the Relay Button widgets on your desktop. Click the button with your mouse to turn on/off Relay 1 and Relay 2 separately. Green means the relay is ON. Red means the relay is OFF.

Step 4: Add two Scan Channel widgets to indicate the status of Push Button 1 and Push Button 2.N-Button software -Add Scan Channel Widget

You will see the Scan Channel widgets on your desktop. Both of them show red. When you press one of the Push Button down it will turn green.

Step 5:  Add two simple Conditions for Relay 1 and Relay 2 separately. The initial status of conditions are Meet. The condition works as a mark for relay channel. The relay will be controlled as long as the condition is Meet.

Step 6: Add two Actions List for both Push Buttons. Once the Push Button is pressed, the Actions on the list will be executed one by one.

For Push Button 1, when the button is pressed there are 5 actions will be executed.

  • Lock Relay 2 : It is a Condition Action to set the Condition 2 (Mark for Relay 2) as Not Meet.
  • Turn Relay 1 On: It is a Relay Action to turn Relay 1 On.
  • Wait: It is a Wait Action. Input the time you want the Relay 1 keeping On.
  • Turn Relay 1 Off: It is a Relay Action to turn Relay 1 Off.
  • Unlock Relay 2 : It is a Condition Action to set the Condition 2 (Mark for Relay 2) as Meet.

In the same way, the 5 actions for Push Button 2 shown as below.

  • Lock Relay 1 : It is a Condition Action to set the Condition 1 (Mark for Relay 1) as Not Meet.
  • Turn Relay 2 On: It is a Relay Action to turn Relay 2 On.
  • Wait: It is a Wait Action. Input the time you want the Relay 2 keeping On.
  • Turn Relay 2 Off: It is a Relay Action to turn Relay 2 Off.
  • Unlock Relay 1 : It is a Condition Action to set the Condition 1 (Mark for Relay 1) as Meet.

We have finished all settings. You will see 4 widgets on your desktop.

When you press Push Button 1, you will see the Relay Button 1 and Scan Channel 1 turn green. Try to press push button 2 during 5 seconds after you press the Push Button 1, there is no action for Relay 2.

After 5 seconds, Relay 1 is Off. Press the Push Button 2, you will see the Relay Button 2 and Scan Channel 2 turn green. Try to press Push Button 1 during 5 seconds after you press the Push Button 2, there is no action for Relay 1 also.

Here we just set the Relay 1 and Relay 2 keeping On for 5 seconds, you can set the time you want.  With the condition rule, you have more ways to control relays with N-Button software.

Control K8090/VM8090 with Relay Timer R8X

There are several ways to control Velleman K8090/VM8090 8-Channel USB Relay card:

This blog will show you an example about how to use Relay Timer R8X software to control K8090/VM8090.

Example task for controlling the K8090 with Relay Timer R8X

At 11:00:00am, we want the K8090 to:

  • Turn Relay 1-8 On one by one with 2-second interval (11:00:00 –11:00:14)
  • Then turn Relay 1-8 OFF one by one with 2-second interval (11:00:16 –11:00:30)
  • And then turn Relay 1-8 All On for 8 seconds (11:00:32 –11:00:40)

Setting up Relay Timer R8X to control the K8090

1. Connect K8090 with your computer through USB cable.

2. Download and Install  Relay Timer R8X software.

3. Launch Relay Timer R8X, set up connection for Relay Timer R8X and K8090.

    • Click Configure button to open Configuration panel
    • Select Manufacturer –>Velleman
    • Select Device Type –> VM8090/K8090
    • Select Port Name for connected K8090

Once the connection is set up, you will see the connection information on Relay Timer R8X status bar.

The flashing arrow means the K8090 has been connected with Relay Timer R8X successfully. It’s ready to control the K8090 relay channels.

There are 8 control panels for K8090 8-relay channels separately. It includes relay channel name, relay channel number, relay status light, auto control area and manual Control area.

You can also control all relay channels manually together with All On and All Off button. After you set up auto control setting for all relay channels, click All Auto button to switch all relay channels in auto control mode. All relay channels will be turned on/off according to the setting automatically.

4. Set auto control alarm for Relay 1.

  • Click auto control Setting button for Relay 1 to open Relay Setting panel
  • Click Add button to open Schedule Setting panel
  • Select Relay Status –Turn On
  • Set up Schedule Time Start as 11:00:00
  • Set up Schedule Time End as 11:00:16

  • Click OK button back to Relay Setting panel, you will see Schedule 1 is added here
  • Click Add button again to add Schedule 2
      • Select Relay Status –Turn On
      • Set up Schedule Time Start as 11:00:32
      • Set up Schedule Time End as 11:00:40

  • Click OK button back to Relay Setting panel, you will see Schedule 2 is added also

  • Click OK button on Relay Setting panel to finish auto control setting for Rely1

5.  Follow Step 4 to set auto control alarm for Relay 2-8.

  • When add Schedule 1 for Relay 2-8, the Start time should be 2 seconds later than the previous channel, and the End time should be 2 seconds later than the previous channel also. That means each relay channel will be turned on 16 seconds. Schedule 1 Start time and End time for Relay 2-8 should be like below:
    • Relay 2 – 11:00:02 –11:00:18
    • Relay 3 – 11:00:04 –11:00:20
    • Relay 4 – 11:00:06 –11:00:22
    • Relay 5 – 11:00:08 –11:00:24
    • Relay 6 – 11:00:10 –11:00:26
    • Relay 7 – 11:00:12 –11:00:28
    • Relay 8 – 11:00:14 –11:00:30
  • Add the same Schedule 2 for Relay 2-8 as Relay 1 in Step 4. Each relay channel will be turned on during 11:00:32 – 11:00:40
  • The Relay Setting for Relay 8 should be shown as below

6. After finishing the auto control settings for all relay channels, click All Auto button to make sure each relay channel stay in auto control mode.  You can also click down Auto mode button on each relay channel manually one by one. Keep relay channels in auto control mode is very important, the schedule settings work only for auto control mode.

7. Then,  you will see when the clock turns to 11:00:00, the relay channels will be turned on one by one and turned off one by one, and all on for a while and all off, shows like the video below.

Above is just a simple example for using Relay Timer R8X to control K8090. You can have your own Schedule settings to control K8090/VM8090 freely.

    • Select Device Type –> VM8090/K8090
    • Select Port Name for connected K8090

Once the connection is set up, you will see the connection information on Quick Timer R8X status bar.

The flashing arrow means the connection is valid. Now, you can control K8090 relay channels with Quick Timer R8X. Each relay channel has a independent control panel. It includes relay channel number, Timer Bar, Auto Control Bar, Auto Control Setting Button, Manual Control Switch, and Relay Status Light.

You can also control all relay channels manually together with Turn All On/Off button. If you have set up auto control setting for all relay channels, click Start All button to control all at the same time.

4. Set auto control timer for Relay 1.

  • Click auto control Setting button for Relay 1 to open Relay 1 Setting panel.
  • Set up Duration for 30 seconds
  • Select Action –>Program
  • Check Always Loop
  • Click Add button to open Item Setting panel
  • Set up Turn On 2 Seconds and Turn Off 3 seconds, keep Loop Count 1
  • Click OK button on Item Setting panel back to Relay1 Setting panel
  • Click OK button on Relay 1 Setting panel to finish the setting

5. Follow Step 4 to set the same auto control timer for Relay 2-4.

  • Click auto control Setting button for Relay 5 to open Relay 5 Setting panel.
  • Set up Duration for 30 seconds
  • Select Action –>Program
  • Check Always Loop
  • Click Add button to open Item Setting panel
  • Set up Turn On 5 Seconds and Turn Off 5 seconds, keep Loop Count 1
  • Click OK button on Item Setting panel back to Relay1 Setting panel
  • Click OK button on Relay 1 Setting panel to finish the setting

7. Follow Step 6 to set the same auto control timer for Relay 6-8.

8. Click Start All button to run auto control timers for 8 relay channels together. You will see during 30 seconds, Relay 1 -4 on 2 seconds, and off 3 seconds; Relay 5-8 on 5 seconds, and off 5 seconds, just like the video shows below.

Smart Control K8090/VM8090 with N-Button Software

N-Button software allows you to create button/widgets to control Serial Port or Network devices without any programming. It has built-in rules for automation control. It’s so easy to realize smart control K8090/VM8090 relay card with N-Button software.

If you have K8090/VM8090 connected with outdoor security lights, you may like to control the lights automatically according to sunset and sunrise.  For example,

  • Turn on relays 10 minutes after sunset
  • Turn off relays 10 minutes before sunrise

Here will show you how to set up N-Button software to do that. 

1. Once you have your security lights connected with K8090/VM8090, be sue to connect K8090/VM8090 with your computer through USB cable.

2. Download and Install N-Button Pro. (N-Button Lite version works also)

3. Launch N-Button Pro, you will see N-Button Pro Manager panel.

4. Click Device Manager to add a new device K8090.

  • Select Manufacturer – Velleman
  • Select Device Type – VM8090/K8090
  • Select Port Name for connected K8090

  • Click OK on about panels, you will see 1 Device is added to N-Button Pro.

5. Add a Relay Button to Toggle All Relays.

  • Click Relay Button to open Properties –Relay Button panel
  • Input a new name or keep the default name
  • Select  Device – K8090
  • Select Action – Toggle All Relays
  • Select Style for the button
  • Input the location or keep default value
  • Select button size or keep default setting

  • Click OK on Properties – Relay Button panel, you will see the Relay Button is added.

  • Click OK on N-Button Pro Manager, you will see the button shows on right-top corner of  your desktop. You can click and drag to move it.

  • Click the button, you will see all K8090 relays On. Click the button again, all relays off. This indicates K8090 relay card works well with N-Button Pro software.

6. Add Automation control rule to turn on all relays 10 minutes after sunset.

  • Right-click the desktop button to show pop-up menu. Click N-Button Pro Manager to show the N-Button Pro Manager panel.

  • Click Automation to show Automation Manager panel
  • Click New to show Rule Type panel
  • Click Time Point Rule to show Time Point Rule panel

  • On Time Point Rule panel, click the first Setting for Time Point to show Automation Rule –Time Point Setting
    • Select Event Time
    • Select Event – Sunset – After
    • Input Time Offset 00:10:00
    • Be sure to input Latitude and Longitude of your location

  • You can click Check Sunrise/Sunset Time to see sunrise and sunset time for your location.

  • Click OK back to Time Point Rule panel
  • Click the second Setting to set up ‘Action when Current Time is On Time Point ‘.
    • Select Action Type – Relay Action
    • Select Action Device – K8090
    • Select Control Action – Turn ON All Relays

  • Click OK on setting panel, you will see Time Point Rule panel like below.

  • Click OK on Time Point Rule panel, back to Automation Manager panel. You will see ‘On after Sunset‘ rule is added here.

7. Add Automation control rule to turn off all relays 10 minutes before sunrise.

  • Click New again to show Rule Type panel.

  • Add the rule for Off before Sunrise similar as settings in Step 6. Time Point Rule panel should show as below.

  • After settings, both rules will be list on Automation Manager panel shown as below.

  • Click OK on Automation Manager panel back to N-Button Pro Manager panel.
  • Click OK on N-Button Pro Manager panel to finish all settings for smart control K8090.

Please make sure the computer installed with N-Button software and connected with K8090 is running all the time. You will see your security lights connected with K8090 are controlled automatically according to sunset and sunrise.

PTZ Controller Supports Xbox 360 Controller for Joystick

PTZ Controller software allows you control PTZ camera with joystick. It works well with Logitech’s joystick and gamepad. The latest PTZ Controller v3.6 supports Xbox 360 controllers also.

Variable Speed Zoom Control for Sony VISCA Protocol

Sony PTZ camera control protocol (VISCA protocol) allows you to control Zoom for camera in constant speed or variable speed. Some PTZ cameras , not Sony cameras, works with variable speed zoom control ONLY.

The latest PTZ Controller v3.5 supports to control Zoom in variable speed for PTZ cameras using Sony VISCA protocol.

On Camera Setting panel, once you select Protocol-> Sony (VISCA), you will see Properties button beside the Sony protocol. Click Properties to show the Sony (VISCA) Properties panel.  Then you can select Constant or Variable mode for Zoom control.

N-Button Automation: Interval Turn On Relay by Push Notification Board

N-Button Lite/Pro software Automation feature allows you to control relay channel by push notification contact closure board of National Control Devices. That means you can set up Automation rule to match input channels of push notification board with relay channels on relay board. The relay status will be changed when the input channel status changes.

Here will show you how to set up N-Button Lite/Pro Automation rule to interval trigger/turn on a relay channel by push notification input channel.

Task: When input channel 1 keeps closure, turn relay 1 on(1 second)  every 5 seconds

Step 1. Download and install N-Button Lite or Pro software

Step 2. Connect push notification board of National Control Devices and relay board with your computer. (N-Button supports relay boards from National Control Devices, Robot Electronics and Velleman VM8090/K8090)

Step 3. Run N-Button Lite/Pro software. Click Devices Manager –> New to add push notification board and relay board to Devices Manager.

Step 4. Click Scan Channel to open Properties – Scan Channel. Select Device MyPushNotificationBoard added above, keep Bank ID 1, select Channel ID 1, select Style for Scan Channel widget.

Step 5. Click OK on both above panels. You will see the Scan Channel widget showing on your desktop is Red.

Trip input channel 1( press the push button connected with input channel 1) to make it closure, you will see the Scan Channel widget on your desktop turns to Green. Release the button, the widget turns to red again. That indicates the push notification board works well with N-Button.

Step 6. Add a Relay Button widget for relay channel 1. It’s similar as Step 4. Just be sure you select Device – MyRelayBoard, Action – Toggle One Relay, Bank ID –1, Relay ID –1, select the Style which will show relay status.

Step 7. Click the Relay Button widget on your desktop to turn on/off relay. The relay status will be shown on the button, green for on and red for off.  That makes sure the relay  board works well with N-Button also.

Note: Here, only one Relay Button is added with action Toggle One Relay. You can add two buttons, one for Turn On One Relay, another for Turn Off One Relay. You can also add Relay Status widget just show the status of relay channel 1.

Step 8. Right-click on the Scan Channel widget or Relay Button widget to show pop-up menu, click N-Button Lite/Pro Manager to open the manager panel. Click Automation on N-Button Lite/Pro Manager to open Automation Manager. Click New to show  Rule Type panel. Click Push Notification Contact Closure Rule to open setting panel.

Step 9.  Click the first Setting button to select Device – MyPushNotificationBoard, Bank ID 1 and Channel ID 1, which you will use to trigger relay channel 1.

Step 10. Click the fourth Setting button to select:

  • Action type –Relay Action
  • Action Device – MyRelayBoard
  • Control Action – Turn On One Relay (Momentary Timer)
  • Momentary Duration: 1 Seconds
  • Bank ID – 1
  • Relay ID – 1

Step 11. Click OK on all above panels to finish Automation control setting until you see the Scan Channel widget on your desktop again. 

Now, every 5 seconds relay channel 1 will be turned on just 1 second automatically by keeping input channel 1 closure.

  • Note: Step 10 is where you can select different action, momentary duration and interval to meet your requirement.

N-Button Automation: Toggle Relay by Push Notification Board

N-Button Lite/Pro software Automation feature allows you to control relay channel by push notification contact closure board of National Control Devices. That means you can set up Automation rule to match input channels of push notification board with relay channels on relay board. The relay status will be changed when the input channel status changes.

Here will show you how to set up N-Button Lite/Pro software to toggle a relay channel by push notification input channel.

Task:  Trip input channel 1 to toggle relay channel 1

Step 1. Download and install N-Button Lite or Pro software

Step 2. Connect push notification board of National Control Devices and relay board with your computer. (N-Button supports relay boards from National Control Devices, Robot Electronics and Velleman)

Step 3. Run N-Button Lite/Pro software. Click Devices Manager –> New to add push notification board and relay board to Devices Manager.

Step 4. Click Scan Channel to open Properties – Scan Channel. Select Device MyPushNotificationBoard added above, keep Bank ID 1, select Channel ID 1, select Style for Scan Channel widget.

Step 5. Click OK on both above panels. You will see the Scan Channel widget showing on your desktop is Red.

Trip input channel 1( or press the push button connected with input channel 1), you will see the Scan Channel widget on your desktop turns to Green. Release the button, the widget turns to red again. That indicates the push notification board works well with N-Button.

Step 6. Add a Relay Button widget for relay channel 1. It’s similar as Step 4. Just be sure you select Device – MyRelayBoard, Action – Toggle One Relay, Bank ID –1, Relay ID –1, select the Style which will show relay status.

Step 7. Click the Relay Button widget on your desktop to turn on/off relay. The relay status will be shown on the button, green for on and red for off.  That makes sure the relay  board works well with N-Button also.

Note: Here, only one Relay Button is added with action Toggle One Relay. You can add two buttons, one for Turn On One Relay, another for Turn Off One Relay. You can also add Relay Status widget just show the status of relay channel 1.

Step 8. Right-click on the Scan Channel widget to show pop-up menu, click N-Button Lite/Pro Manager to open the manager panel. Click Automation on N-Button Lite/Pro Manager to open Automation Manager. Click New to show  Rule Type panel. Click Push Notification Contact Closure Rule to open setting panel.

Step 9.  Click the first Setting  button to select Device – MyPushNotificationBoard, Bank ID 1 and Channel ID 1, which you will use to toggle relay channel 1.

Step 10. Click the second Setting button to select:

  • Action type –Relay Action
  • Action Device – MyRelayBoard
  • Control Action – Toggle One Relay
  • Bank ID – 1
  • Relay ID – 1

Step 11. Click OK on all above panels to finish Automation control setting until you see the Scan Channel widget on your desktop. 

Now, you can toggle relay channel 1 by changing input channel 1 status( push the button to change its status) . If relay 1 is off, it will turn on after you push the button. If relay1 is on, it will turn off after you push the button.

  • Note: Step 10 is the key to select the action trigged by input status change. You can select different action to meet your requirement.
